Anastasia dvdrip displayed an online debate titled “One Tweet Over the Line Trapped Ashes video
Infamous trailer ” which invited people to engage in the issue of whether social networking tools are overused. Of particular interest was the discussion about how consumers are using social networking to divulge too much personal or private information. Clay Shirky, a professor from NYU, mentioned how embarrassing incidents of youth are now highlighted on Facebook and Twitter. He makes the argument that in some cases adults should look the other way. I’ve blogged before about how kids’ view of privacy is different from adults today. Kids put pictures online that I would consider too private for mass consumption. Is it just a matter of adjusting our view of privacy to find some items more “acceptable,” like embarrassing drinking photos that are posted online? Or is it a matter of teaching our children the value of privacy and to understand the consequences of revealing too much private information online?

Timothy Lee, a scholar from the CATO Institute takes a different approach to privacy in social networking and mentions that there is “little in between” when it comes to either posting information that is public via social networking sites or sending something privately via email. He cautions us to give social networking sites time to enhance privacy options.
Currently, there are some good options among social networking sites to allow consumers to manage the “privacy settings” to determine the information that is revealed about themselves online. It is critical that consumers continue to have these options available as social networking sites evolve. It is also important to continue educating our kids about the value of online privacy and to think twice about what they are about to post online.
